PB-1 delivers performance and efficiency
Pipe systems made from polybutene-1 demonstrate exceptional performance and offer energy-efficient and environmentally acceptable capabilities for challenging environments.
By their very nature, islands are conscious of their energy balance, and this case study example is no exception, as it involves a new district heating network supplied by the local waste-to-energy plant from a readily available energy source.
Thermaflex supplies a 1600 kW district heating network in the Azores
When heat sources from fossil fuels are replaced by waste heat from industry or heat from solar or biomass installations, the carbon footprint is drastically reduced. The Thermaflex project is an outstanding example of the sensible use of energy that would otherwise be considered “waste heat” and subsequently lost if not used in a modern district heating network, such as this latest example in Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira, carried out by João Pualino Lda and his team.
The lightweight, flexible, pre-insulated Flexalen network, constructed with polybutene-1 (PB-1, polybutylene) for the pipes, is the perfect solution for the undulating landscape and comes with a 100% corrosion-free guarantee, ideal for coastal climates! PB-1 pipe systems do not expand in hard water areas or corrode in soft water areas.
The Thermaflex team of experts is delighted to be involved in the design, delivery and support of this network, which will help balance energy consumption while minimising environmental impact in this ecologically sensitive location.
Long-term ISO 9080 tests carried out on polybutene-1 pipes project a service life of 50 years or more for PB-1 hot water pipes operating with water at 70 °C and a pressure of 10 bar. ISO 9080 tests are conducted in accordance with international protocols by independent, accredited testing agencies such as EXOVA.

PB-1 Pipe | Eco Impact
PB-1 Pipe | Sustainable systems
Pipe systems manufactured from polybutene-1 demonstrate exceptional performance in a variety of demanding long-term applications and have become a vital part of modern, energy-efficient and environmentally acceptable construction technology, leading to rapid global growth in the use of the product in recent years.
